Under article 4.2, paragraph (e) of the Staff Regulations, the filling of vacancies in technical cooperation projects does not fall under Annex I of the Staff Regulations and is made by direct selection by the Director-General.

Technical cooperation appointments are not expected to lead to a career in the ILO and they do not carry any expectation of renewal or conversion to any other type of appointment in the Organization. A one-year fixed-term contract will be given. Extensions of technical cooperation contracts are subject to various elements including the following: availability of funds, continuing need of the functions and satisfactory conduct and performance.

 

*Conditions of employment for external candidates: In conformity with existing ILO practice, the appointment of an external candidate will normally be made at the first step of this grade. The entry level salary for this position is K128,440 (Zambian Kwacha) yearly.

Introduction

The successor UN Joint Program for Social Protection (UNJPSP-II) in Zambia builds on the lessons learned from the first programme, and includes ambitious targets for streamlining benefits and service delivery through single-window service centres, support for disability inclusion across the whole of the social protection sector, strengthening state institutions, and promoting greater citizen and beneficiary voice in the governance of the social protection system.  As a critical part of the support provided to this initiative under the UNJPSP-II, the social protection team within the ILO Country Office for Zambia, Malawi and Mozambique will provide technical advice and other assistance to constituents in Zambia, including Government, social partners and civil society organizations through joint UN action.

 

The UNJPSP-II includes a strong emphasis on knowledge generation and knowledge sharing, as well as creation and implementation of an effective communications strategies to support Government efforts in promoting greater disability inclusion, introducing a single-window delivery mechanism for social protection benefits and services, and increasing citizen and beneficiary voice in social protection governance. The support provided by the Communications and Information Clerk (CIC) to the project is expected to lead to better understanding of social protection principles and existing programmes among programme stakeholders and the general public and to assist in fostering a culture of social protection in Zambia among current and future officials, social partners and members of civil society. 

 

 

Reporting Lines  

 

Under the overall responsibility of the ILO Country Office Director for Zambia, Malawi and Mozambique, the Driver will report and work under the direction of the Technical Advisor (TA).

 

Description of Duties

The Driver will perform the following tasks:

  1.  Drive office vehicles for official purposes
  2. Meet official personnel at the airport and facilitate immigration and customs formalities
  3. Collect and deliver mail, pouch, documents, and other items
  4. Responsible for the da-to-day maintenance of the assigned vehicle, check oil, water, battery, brakes, tires etc., perform minor repairs and arrange for other repairs, and ensure that the vehicle is kept clean
  5. Keep records of use of the vehicle, daily mileage, gas consumption, oil changes, greasing and other services
  6. Ensure that the steps required by rules and regulations are taken in case of involvement in accident
  7. Perform miscellaneous office support functions such as messenger services and making photocopies
  8. Perform other duties as may be assigned by the supervisor and Director.
Required qualifications
Education

Primary education, valid driver's license, knowledge of driving rules and regulations, and skills in minor vehicle repairs. A safe driving course will be an added advantage.

Experience

Two years' work experience as a driver with a safe driving record. Experience in the UN system or NGO sector will be an added advantage

Languages

Good knowledge of the local language and knowledge of English.

Competencies

A high level of driving, vehicle repair, and maintenance skills. Proven ability to keep accurate records of the use of the vehicle. Proven ability to drive safely in local traffic conditions. Ability to follow instructions. Ability to undertake minor vehicle repair. Ability to lift heavy mail bags and boxes. Ability to work in a polite, courteous and cooperative manner.
