The internship programme is not intended to lead to a career in the ILO. There should be no expectation of further employment at the end of the internship.

Department

The internship is within the ILO Labour Migration branch (MIGRANT), part of the Conditions of Work and Equality department (WORKQUALITY). The Branch supports decent work for migrant workers and refugees through research and capacity-building activities promoting ratification and application of relevant international labour standards on labour migration and decent work; fair recruitment of migrant workers; social protection of migrant workers and refugees; skill development and recognition; return and reintegration of migrant workers; and support to ensure decent work for refugees and climate-related migrants.

 

MIGRANT supports constituents’ efforts to promote ratification and implementation of relevant ILO standards and provides legal advisory services on draft labour migration law and policy, and bilateral labour migration agreements.  It undertakes research and capacity-building activities on migrant workers’ rights including fundamental rights at work, wage protection, and fair recruitment, for example.  It collaborates closely with the UN human rights mechanisms, in particular the UN Special Rapporteur on the human rights of migrants and the UN Committee on Migrant Workers.

Learning Area

The internship will support MIGRANT’s work on promoting the rights of migrant workers and refugees, in particular those in the most vulnerable situations, and support the Branch’s work on legal issues and international labour standards specific to migrant workers’ rights and labour migration and mobility.

 

You will be exposed to a whole range of international labour standards and ILO guidance to promote migrant workers’ rights, ILO’s means of action to support its constituents, and ILO collaboration with other UN agencies and partners, on migrant workers’ rights.

 

You will gain experience in the full range of ILO’s engagement in these structures, across areas including labour migration; migration and development; migration and climate change; social protection; and refugees’ inclusion into labour markets and their access to decent work. …

Interns should expect to devote 10% to 20% of their time to administrative tasks.

 

  • Undertake research to support the development of a Guide for practitioners and policymakers on ILO standards and migrant workers and refugees, and briefing materials on topics specifically relevant to migrant workers (e.g. fundamental rights at work, wage protection, or violence and harassment).

 

  • Assist in the review of draft laws on labour migration and draft bilateral labour migration agreements (BLMAs) in line with ILO standards; identify and document exemplary provisions in labour migration laws and BLMAs and support the development of an internal ILO strategy to support constituents with development and implementation of BLMAs in line with relevant ILO standards.

 

  • Support the work of the Branch on drafting ILO submissions to the UN human rights mechanisms, including UN human rights treaty bodies, UN Special Rapporteurs, or follow-up to UN General Assembly resolutions

 

  • In light of the anniversaries of Conventions Nos. 97 and No. 143, the Protocol to Convention No. 29 and the ILO Fair Recruitment Initiative, support internal and external communication efforts to raise the visibility of ILO standards relevant to migrant workers and the ILO rights-based approach to labour migration, including through the organization of events, design and dissemination of communication materials, and other channels.

Education

Law or other relevant discipline. Applicants should currently be in the last year of a Master's degree (or equivalent), or have completed studies within 12 months prior to this application. 

Experience

Any relevant work experience and knowledge of IT would be an advantage

Languages

Applicants should have working knowledge (both oral and written) of at least one of the ILO's official languages (English, French or Spanish).

Competencies

Applicants should be able to adapt to an international, multicultural and multilingual environment, have good communication skills, and be able to work in teams.

Selection process:

 

Following a first screening by the Human Resources Development Department (HRD), hiring departments will short-list applicants. You will be directly contacted should an internship opportunity match your profile. If you have not been contacted by any department within six months after your application, you can consider that you have not been selected by any department for this roster. If still eligible, you may apply to the next roster. 

 

If shortlisted, you may be contacted by the hiring department for a written test and/or interview. The ILO may use communication technologies such as Skype, Video or teleconference, e-mail, etc for the assessment and evaluation of candidates.

 

Stipend:

 

As an intern in Geneva, you will receive a stipend of 2450 CHF per month from the ILO, unless you receive funding through another institution (for example your university or a foundation). If you receive partial funding, ILO will cover the difference to ensure you receive 2450 CHF per month. Your travel to Geneva will be at your own expense.In addition to the amounts referred above, each intern shall receive the amount of CHF45 per month, or the equivalent amount in the currency in which the monthly stipend is paid, which is a contribution from the Office towards the cost of medical insurance to cover the period of the internship.

 

Insurance:

 

Please note that the ILO does not take responsibility for any costs arising from accidents and/or illness incurred during the internship. You will be responsible for your own insurance coverage for illness and accidents for the duration of the internship at the duty station (whether Geneva or the field).
