IMPORTANT:

 

You can only apply for an internship if you:

  3. Are enrolled in a Master’s or a Doctorate Programme, or have completed such a programme in the year preceding the application.
  4. Have a working (both oral and written) knowledge of English. This is mandatory.
     

 

 

Department(s)

The internship position is located in the Research and Publications Department of the ILO (RESEARCH), which conducts research on labour and employment issues with the aim of contributing to policy formulation for ILO constituents and promoting decent work for all. The Department has been assessing the implications for decent work and socio-economic outcomes from major transformative changes related to new technologies, inequalities manifesting in the world of work, demographic shifts, climate change, and trade and global supply chains. The Department also generates new research on “frontier issues” to support the needs of ILO constituents and develop innovative policy thinking for a human-centred future of decent work. The department has an outreach strategy through academic networks, tailored capacity building of constituents on evidence-based policy making, as well as an array of audience targeted publications, print and digital.

 

The RESEARCH Department, including through the International Labour Review, collaborates with various research and academic networks across the globe.  As part of developing its Research Agenda 2026-29, the Department seeks to assess and expand its understanding of potential research partners, as well as innovative sources of funding to enhance collaboration and support ILO research programmes on decent work and the future of work. 
The current internship is situated in the Directorate of the Department, working in collaboration with thematic research teams, Regional field-based specialists, the Global PARTNERSHIPS Department, as well as the ILO’s four Action Programmes and policy departments. 

Learning areas

As an Intern in the RESEARCH Department, you will work under the overall supervision of the Senior Adviser in the Research and Publications Department, and in close consultations with other relevant colleagues in the Department, Regions and Headquarters. A strong curiosity to explore potential research avenues that align closely with the ILO’s mandate is needed, and you  will learn about the different research thematic areas and contribute to the analysis of new potential research partnerships with external institutions, organisations, foundations, etc. :
•    You will take assess recently implemented partnerships (past) and currently ongoing partnerships.
•    You will research, map and assess new potential partnerships to support the 2026-29 Research Agenda (currently under development), including international organizations, institutions, think tanks foundations, universities and research centres, among others, from all Regions.
•    You will identify funding requirements and suggest priorities matching potential partners with relevant thematic research areas.

 

In this internship, you will be exposed to a whole range of areas in the field of partnership building, resource mobilization and communication outreach. You would be gaining experience in working with specialists who are involved in frontier research topics related to the world of work, contributing to the Research Agenda 2026-29 with strengthened and expanded research partnerships to be implemented with colleagues in the Regions.

 

Interns should expect to devote 10% to 20% of their time to administrative tasks.

Education

Social Sciences, International Development, Public Policies, Educational Sciences, Communication or related fields.


The candidate must be enrolled in Master’s or PhD programme or have completed such a programme no longer than 1 year ago

Experience

Research and/or work experience in building partnerships for research or development cooperation; knowledge of working with MS Office and Teams, AI tools for data analysis and project management.

Languages

Working (both oral and written) knowledge of English and the other ILO official languages (French, Spanish) is an asset.

Competencies

Applicants should be able to adapt to an international, multicultural and multilingual environment, have good communication skills, and be able to work in teams.

Additional requirements

Familiarity with funding opportunity databases would be an advantage. Basic knowledge of statistical software such as SPSS, R, or Stata; with an understanding of the skills in data analysis using tools like Excel, Python, or Tableau would be an advantage.

Selection process:

 

Following a first screening by the Human Resources Development Department (HRD), hiring departments will short-list applicants. You will be directly contacted should an internship opportunity match your profile. If you have not been contacted by any department within six months after your application, you can consider that you have not been selected by any department for this roster. If still eligible, you may apply to the next roster. 

 

If shortlisted, you may be contacted by the hiring department for a written test and/or interview. The ILO may use communication technologies such as Skype, Video or teleconference, e-mail, etc for the assessment and evaluation of candidates.

 

Stipend/Financial compensations:

 

As an intern in Geneva, you will receive a stipend of 2450 CHF per month from the ILO, unless you receive funding through another institution (for example your university or a foundation). If you receive partial funding, ILO will cover the difference to ensure you receive 2450 CHF per month. Your travel to Geneva will be at your own expense. In addition to the amounts referred above, each intern shall receive the amount of CHF45 per month, or the equivalent amount in the currency in which the monthly stipend is paid, which is a contribution from the Office towards the cost of medical insurance to cover the period of the internship.

 

Qualified candidates from non- and under- represented countries may be eligible for a special fund that provides financial assistance for round-trip airfare (economy class) in addition to the stipend.

 

Insurance:

 

Please note that the ILO does not take responsibility for any costs arising from accidents and/or illness incurred during the internship. You will be responsible for your own insurance coverage for illness and accidents for the duration of the internship at the duty station (whether Geneva or the field).
