Introduction
The Emerging and South-South Partnerships Unit (ESPU) under the Department for Multilateral Partnerships and Development Cooperation (PARTNERSHIPS) has the function of developing and reinforcing partnerships of key strategic importance that promote the Decent Work Agenda, in particular: South-South and Triangular Cooperation (SSTC) and Engagement with emerging partners, including BRICS and Arab Partners and with countries from the “Global South”.
These partnerships complement those promoted and nurtured by the other work units of PARTNERSHIPS. The unit provides strategic information on development cooperation policies from emerging partners and about UN trends linked to South-South partners to PARTNERSHIPS units as well to relevant departments of the ILO. The current new challenges exacerbated by COVID 19, the current crisis and ongoing conflicts, comprise an additional challenge and calls for a renewed engagement of partners of the South and emerging partners, and on specific areas of work, including the Global Accelerator for Jobs and Social Protection and the Global Coalition on Social Justice. Also the G20 has created a voluntary mechanism of triangular cooperation that the ILO is supporting though our department.
Learning areas
This internship will provide to the incumbent hands-on experience in international development cooperation, resource mobilization, and partnership management, especially dealing with emerging, South-South and special partnerships. The internship will assist in building and maintaining relationships with key development partners, particularly focusing on funding agreements with countries in the Global South and emerging partners. The tasks will include drafting communication materials, supporting the background materials and negotiations of new funding agreements, and identifying resource mobilization opportunities in G77 + China countries. Additionally, the internship will help raise awareness of South-South and Triangular Cooperation (SSTC) by organizing study tours, sharing good practices, and supporting capacity-building activities for advancing the Decent Work Agenda. Through these tasks, the incumbent will develop valuable skills in partnership engagement, communication, and program management, essential for a career in international development.
The Internship within the Emerging Partnerships and South-South and Triangular Cooperation (SSTC) function provides valuable experience in international cooperation and partnership development, particularly in engaging with emerging partners such as BRICS countries. This internship will support the coordination of triangular cooperation initiatives and work closely with various international bodies, including the G20 and the Inter-Agency Mechanism on SSTC, in collaboration with the UN Office for South-South Cooperation (UNOSSC). This role offers exposure to global policy discussions and contributes to advancing the Decent Work Agenda (DWA) through innovative partnerships, capacity development, and knowledge-sharing activities. Interns will also develop an understanding of how global actors collaborate on labour and employment issues and how these efforts are integrated into broader international cooperation strategies.
NB: Interns should expect to devote 10% to 20% of their time to administrative tasks.
