The ILO Internship Programme provides an opportunity for talented individuals to: (a) increase understanding of relevant issues at the international level by involving them directly in the work of the Office and the application of ILO principles, programmes and strategies; (b) gain practical experience with the ILO directly related to their field of study.  The internship programme is not intended to lead to a career in the ILO. There should be no expectation of further employment at the end of the internship.


As part of this programme, the ILO, Country Office Addis Ababa would like to recruit an intern for the Human Resources Unit.  As an HR intern, the selected applicant will gain experience in different areas such as the following: 

  • Recruitment and selection
  • HR Administration
  • Leave Management,
  • Performance Appraisal
  • Employment Contracts
  • Interpretation of staff regulations and HR Policies
  • Job description formulation, and
  • people management
Learning areas

To assist in administrative and coordination work for recruitment activities (Recruitment and Selection)

  • Provide support in the recruitment activities from job descriptions reviewing, sharing adverts to the office staff, assisting in the screening process, taking notes in panel interviews and etc…
  • Schedule and liaise with candidates in the recruitment process , including written test and panel interviews
  • Arrange venues, facilities and documents for the written test and interviews
  • Assist in new staff orientation programmes and do orientations for new staff


HR administration

  • Update data on staff entry, periodic, and exit medical
  • Maintain a proper filing system for HR data and records and documents (online and hardcopy)
  • Create a Welcome package for the office
  • Assisting in implementing staff regulations and HR policies
  • Monitor staff performance appraisals
  • Assist in advise for staff on HR rules and regulations to increase staff knowledge on their work conditions in the ILO


To provide general HR related support

  • Draft and /or process a variety of correspondence and other communications
  • Take notes in RB meetings
  • Assist in preparation of necessary documentations to various staff, departments, duty stations
  • Support other/ad hoc activities as seen relevant and needed


Required profile

Candidates should normally be enrolled in the final year of a postgraduate degree programme (such as a Masters programme or equivalent), or in a higher degree programme in a recognized university/College or have completed such programme in the previous or current year.


Masters Degree in Human Resources, Business Management, Organisational Psychology, Industrial Psychology,  or equivalent higher degree in any Social Sciences


Any relevant work experience and knowledge of Human Resource Management would be an advantage.


Good knowledge of English (both written and oral) and Amharic.

  • A desire to work with and gain the confidence and respect of people with different language, national and cultural backgrounds

This vacancy is open to Ethiopian Nationals only who have not undertaken an internship with the ILO or have not previously worked for the ILO.
